Increase in Paper Price Hits Printing Industry Hard

In an era of cost control and low inflation, recent announcements of dramatic increases in the price of paper are an obvious cause for concern for the printing industry.

In the first quarter of 2010, paper prices have risen by as much as 12% and there are no immediate signs of relief within the UK printing sector.

Why have paper prices soared? There are several issues that have combined to drive prices up:

Increasing production costs

The rising $ (USD) and increasing pulp prices have been combined with a global increase in energy costs due to the ballooning cost of crude oil. This has inevitably led to rising transportation costs and increased freight rates for both pulp and paper.

Reduced wood and pulp capacity

The hard winter in Russia, Northern Europe and Southern America has led to a global shortage of wood. A significant earthquake in Chile has compounded the problem, affecting 20% of global short fibre pulp capacity. As a result, pulp stocks are currently at their lowest levels for 20 years.

Reduced paper capacity in Europe

As well as underlying structural capacity reductions in coated and uncoated paper since 2007, there have been additional factors such as the Finnish port strikes and the Condat Mill strike that have had a considerable impact on the European capacity. This has been further compounded by the fact that the UK is a less attractive market when compared to higher priced markets such as North America and Russia where increased demand is leading to restricted supply in Europe.

The net effect is that there is a restricted supply of pulp globally, but the shortage is especially acute in the European market.

Printing companies therefore face the likelihood of further price increases in the short term and the real risk of restrictions on supply.

In an industry where margins are already very tight, the likelihood is that their customers will have to share the increase in paper prices.

LED Signs – The Secret to Increasing Sales That Your Marketing Expert Won’t Tell You About

Hire a highly qualified advertising and marketing professional and you probably won’t find yourself learning about signage. You’ll probably hear about newspaper ads and TV or radio spots that many viewers will dismiss because they are outside of your target market. Maybe you’ll hear about costly direct mail campaigns. Possibly some Internet options: pay per click ads, banners, search engine optimization. You probably won’t hear about LED signs in spite of the significant and immediate impact that they are proven to have on the success of businesses. The Small Business Administration states, “signs are the most effective, yet least expensive form of advertising for the small business” and even goes as far as to state that “good signage can make the difference between the success and failure” of a business!

You may be wondering, why the big secret among marketing professionals? Failing to recognize the value of signage may be like failing to see the forest for the trees. Maybe signs are just too obvious for the marketing professionals to focus on. As the Five Man Electrical Band sang back in 1970, “sign, sign, everywhere a sign”. Whatever the reasons, those who study business agree, a well designed, well utilized and well placed sign can be the most cost-effective valuable marketing tool your business can utilize. The Outdoor Billboard Business – Discovering Hidden Opportunities When Buying Existing Billboards

Outdoor billboards are a perfect way to earn extra income or even start a business. Despite popular belief, the billboard business still has many opportunities and the best yet is purchasing existing billboards. After all, someone else has done the difficult work of scouting an appropriate location, negotiating the ground lease, and obtaining the appropriate permits.

How does one go after existing billboards then?

If you’ve heard of people who rehabilitate property, the concept is very similar. With this strategy, you scout for existing signs and billboards that can be spruced up with small repairs and have them looking all new and attractive.

Most billboard startup entrepreneurs can attest to the fact that existing billboards can form a very strong and formidable foundation in one’s portfolio of billboards. However, few are willing to share their secrets to acquiring existing billboards until now. I have several methods to acquire existing billboards.

The first strategy in the purchase of existing billboard is to seek out those old and obsolete signs which have been overlooked. This might by far be the best way to approach the billboard business. You can decide to start with obsolete and old signs in your area. For me, I went after a chain of old franchises that closed shop long time ago. To my surprise, no one has ever approached them about their old signs. The signs themselves were run down and dilapidated. However, every billboard that they operated came with a valid permit, which was the real goldmine. I fixed up each sign and then rented the billboards out to advertisers for a very profitable return on equity annually.
The other existing billboard opportunity is to seek out the money-losers for existing billboard companies such as CBS Outdoor, Clear Channel, or Lamar. I call these “dog” signs because they are considered unprofitable by the big players. Several reasons might have led to their diminished status. For instance, trees might obstruct some, in which case you only need to find a way to trim the trees on the immediate property or the neighbor’s property. Whatever the reason, think creatively because the larger billboard operators may decide to sell off a perfectly good sign due to a relatively minor issue that could be easily fixed. When pursuing this strategy, you’ll want to make sure you establish good relationships with the key people in these larger billboard companies so you have the opportunity to snatch up a billboard when the deal is offered to you.
Another seldom explored strategy when looking for sources of existing billboards is going for those signs that are lumped into bankruptcy or foreclosure proceedings. This will call for a lot of patience and establishing the right relationships, but the effort will eventually pay off. Acquiring signs through this method can be very lucrative because the banks don’t always apply the appropriate value to a billboard. In other words, this is a strategy where one could acquire signs for less than the replacement cost of the sign.
The last existing billboard sourcing is to purchase at full retail. This strategy applies to billboards that have enduring potential because you’re paying a premium for it already. I would exercise caution with this strategy because rents might fluctuate if the market conditions deteriorate. In other words, you may purchase a sign for full retail at the peak of the market and then suddenly have challenges collecting the same rent from advertisers if the local economy takes a dip.

Billboards are investments that can be very profitable if done in the correct way. Buying existing billboards is just one way of getting a foothold in the industry. I know this from first-hand experience because approximately 30% of my billboards were obtained through the various strategies I have just shared with you.

LCD Flat Screen TV – Are 120Hz LCD Flat Screen TVs Worth The Extra Money?

If you have been looking at buying an LCD flat screen tv, no doubt you have read about the 120Hz models. You are probably wondering if the 120Hz models are worth the extra cost. The value of the 120hz feature has been widely debated in recent months. There are a number of things to consider before making your decision.

In the early days of the LCD vs Plasma tv wars, one of the biggest drawbacks to purchasing an LCD tv was that they were prone to motion blur and a somewhat choppy picture, especially in times when there was a lot of fast action such as sports or in movie scenes such as car chases. Although there has been a great deal of improvement over the years in the tvs ability to handle fast motion, LCD is still battling the stigma of not having as smooth of a picture as plasmas.

Enter the 120Hz tv. As a direct response, LCD manufacturers have incorporated 120Hz tvs into their newest tv models. These tvs have refresh rates that are twice as fast as the “standard” 60Hz models.

Those who are supporters of the 120Hz technology claim that the picture is noticeably smoother with crystal clear clarity, especially during fast action scenes or sports. Another benefit is the ability to produce an almost 3D-like picture.

On the other hand, others say that they can’t notice a difference when comparing side to side with the “standard” 60Hz models. They feel that the 120Hz models are simply marketing gimmicks to sell higher priced tv.

So who is right? As usual there is a middle ground. Put simply, a 120Hz tv will take a standard 60Hz signal and simply replicate it twice which by itself does little to enhance the picture quality. The real difference is made when applying a video processing feature for motion enhancement. Each company has there own name for this process. For example, Samsung’s feature is called AMP for Auto Motion Plus. This feature takes the screen and interpolates the image to provide a smoother picture to reduce judder.

Does the motion enhancement provide a more satisfactory picture? Again this is open to debate. Motion enhancement at its best provides a noticeably smoother, stable picture, free of jutter, motion blur and ghosting. Some describe gaming in 120Hz as making a 30 frames per second game look like a 60 frames per second game, while others are mesmerized by the ability to make sports and movies look live and 3D-like.

At its worst motion enhancement, especially during fast motion can introduce split second glitches in the picture called artifacts which can obviously be distracting. Others feel that while documentary type shows like Planet Earth can provide stunning stable live action shots, that motion enhancement takes away from the cinematic feel of movies by providing an almost too realistic, live tv or soap opera feel instead of a cinematic experience.

It is important to point out that motion enhancement can be turned on or off, so if you prefer to watch a movie without the motion enhancement you can simply turn it off.

For the time being the choice to go with a 120Hz LCD flat screen tv is purely one of personal choice and budget. Keep in mind that this is a very new technology and as with all new technologies there are still some things that need to be perfected. There is little debate that 120Hz is the wave of the future and that technology will only improve over time. If price is not of primary concern or if you can spare the extra dollars in an attempt to future proof your tv purchase then it would seem to make perfect sense to go with the additional features and benefits that a 120Hz LCD flat screen tv can offer. If price is a primary factor and you are working on a limited budget then one of the standard models would be a fine choice until the 120Hz models are perfected.
